Which ice a dirty soda actually wants
Ice is not a garnish in this drink — it is most of the cup. These are the four styles, what each one does to the soda, and which of them a freezer can actually produce.
A soda-shop cup is packed with ice and the drink lives in the gaps. That means the ice is doing three jobs at once, and the styles are not interchangeable at any of them: it takes up room, it melts into the drink, and its surface knocks dissolved CO₂ out of solution.
These are the figures Dirty Soda Maker's own model uses. Melt and fizz-loss are relative to a plain freezer cube, so 2.6× means two and a half times faster than the tray in your kitchen.

What the numbers mean in the cup
Fills is the fraction of the cup the ice occupies. It is why a 32 oz cup of crushed holds noticeably less drink than the same cup with one big rock in it — and why the shop's cup looks so full.
Melts is dilution. Surface area drives it, so the same mass of ice broken smaller waters the drink down faster. Crushed is the extreme: fast to chill, fast to ruin.
Scrubs fizz is nucleation. Every bubble needs a rough site to form on, and pellet and crushed ice are covered in them. That is the trade nobody mentions: the ice that makes the drink feel most like a soda shop is also the ice that flattens it quickest. It is the reason the build steps in this app tell you to pour down the side of the cup.
So which one
Nugget if you are chasing the soda-shop drink — it is the chewable pebble ice the whole category is built around. Cubes if you want the drink to last, and you already own a freezer. Crushed for something you will finish fast and cold. A big rock if you are sipping rather than chugging: it fills the least and melts at less than half the rate of a cube.
